New Eden Collaborative is proud to present our New Eden Chicken Co-op. Together as a community we have decided to keep poultry. The chickens will be raised organically, humanely, cage free, and free range. We have begun with 16 chickens and 2 ducks. We will raise those animals from chicks/ducklings through adulthood and we will keep their eggs. Because chickens and ducks not only provide food, but are living animals, we take their well‐being VERY seriously. We will not end the lives of our chickens or ducks for any reason unless to relieve them of unnecessary and unavoidable pain.
We are presently taking applications for poultry shares. There are 10 shares available. Members of the New Eden Chicken Co-op are responsible for a weekly watering and feeding of our 16 hens and 2 Peking Ducks. When the poultry are old enough to lay eggs share holders will be able to gather the collective’s “eggs of the day” every two weeks.
Those interested should download our Chicken Covenant to understand share holder expectations.
On Tuesday, April 20th there is a required meeting for all aspiring share holders from 6-8:30PM at First Parish Church, Newbury. At 6 there will be registration and turning in of the signed Chicken Covenant. At 6 :30 John Dodge from Dodge’s Agway in New Hampshire will lecture on poultry raising. After the lecture the lottery for chicken share will be held.
John Dodge has been raising poultry for over seventy years and his lecture promises to be highly informative. His lecture is free and open to the public.
