First Parish Church of Newbury, located in Newbury, MA is pleased to announce the return of The George Cole Quintet on Saturday, January 21, 2012 at 7:30pm. Join us for a night of exquisite jazz as internationally renowned acoustic guitar virtuoso, George Cole, treats audiences to selections from “The Great American Cole Book”. Tickets are $12.00 in advance or $15.00 at the door the night of the performance, and can be purchased by calling the Church office at 978-465-5597.

This winter Mr. Cole and his quintet will be bringing warmth, wit, and humor to theaters in the mid-west and east coast. The George Cole Quintet presents an elegant evening of music, style, and outstanding musicianship. A glimpse into an alternate universe where melody, harmony and great showmanship reign supreme. Their style is pure “Eurocana” – meaning inspiration is drawn from the string-driven swing created by Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli as well as America’s greatest composers. The Quintet’s music is sprinkled with red hot violin and Cole’s “Speed of Light” guitar technique. George Cole continues his mission to write a new chapter of the Great American Songbook with the help of the San Francisco Bay Area’s top musicians. The band’s current CD, Riverside Drive, is currently in heavy rotation on radio stations across America and their show is not to be missed. You’ll see the stylish retro presence of George Cole on guitar/vocals, stunning showstopper Hale Baskin on vocals, Berkelee trained violin virtuoso Nancy Kuo, propulsive rhythm guitarist Jimmy Grant, and swinging upright bassist Christopher Bastian.

First Parish Church of Newbury (FPCN) is proud to present Bryan Bowers, nationally recognized singer/ songwriter and performer on the autoharp. Bowers is to the autoharp as Earl Scruggs is to the 5-string banjo or Jerry Douglas to the dobro. He brings a wonderful stage presence and deeply evocative singing voice to his performances. Bowers is a wonderful raconteur in the truest sence too!

We are excited to present this legend of the autoharp who has been performing around the country for over forty years with such luminaries as Sam Bush, Stuart Duncan, Tim O’Brien, Jerry Garcia, David Grisman, and the Dillards.

Local favorites, The Goodhues Band, are the opening act playing American Roots music. A wonderful night of music you shouldn’t miss!

Please join us on Sunday, January 9th at 4:00 PM for a presentation and discussion with Chuck Collins, a senior scholar at the Institute for Policy Studies, exploring the roots of the economic and ecological challenges of our time using a community-based, small-group approach to understanding and addressing these issues. The questions explored will include how we got where we are today and how we can help ourselves prepare for the economic and ecological changes that are upon us.

These challenges often leave people feeling isolated, vulnerable and anxious. In small groups members can help one another find connection, the information they need and avenues to a new kind of security… one based on mutual aid and support. Many of these groups have formed across the country inspired by the concept of common security clubs. (<noindex>commonsecurityclub.org</noindex>)

In response to this concept Seacoast Community Empowerment Circles are forming in the local area. There will be an opportunity for those who are interested to sign up.

Chuck Collins is an expert on U.S. inequality and author of several books, including Economic Apartheid in America: A Primer on Economic Inequality and Insecurity, co-authored with Felice Yeskel. (New Press, 2005). He co-authored with Bill Gates Sr. Wealth and Our Commonwealth, (Beacon Press, 2003), a case for taxing inherited fortunes.

This program will be held at the First Parish Church of Newbury at 20 High Road and is sponsored by the Central Congregational Church, First Parish Church, First Religious Society of Newburyport (UU), New Eden Collaborative, Pennies for Poverty:2 Cents for Change, The Poverty Program, Transition Newburyport and the Greater Newburyport YWCA.

Following the program all are invited to participate in the Local Flavor Community Potluck Picnic that follows at 5:30 PM. The Local Flavor Potluck Picnics are monthly local food, no-waste events that feature good food, good discussion and good music. For more information on the potluck visit <noindex>transitionnewburyport.org</noindex>

Come Feast with us at our first Thanksgiving Community Bake on November 13th & 14th

First Parish will be collaborating with Transition Newburyport, the North Shore Permaculture Meetup and the New Eden Community for our first 24 hour community bake that will culminate in a pot luck Thanksgiving feast at 4 pm on Sunday November 14th. Please sign up for a time when you would like to bring food to bake in the oven.

The Schedule is as follows: Saturday 4:30 pm, Pizza breads and pies, (Fire of 400-350 degrees) After 6pm slow cook, low fire foods such as beans will stay the night in the oven. The oven will be stoked up again Sunday morning and will be hot enough for pizza by noon and will be baking pies, veggies, breads and more till our feast at 4:pm. Please contact me at erinstack@comcast.net or 978-807-6315 to reserve a baking time so I can make sure everyone’s food gets baked. If your time is short, you may drop off food for the feast and we will bake it for you. We are asking for a suggested $5 donation to offset the cost of the oven and support our environmental mission.

I look forward to celebrating with you all! Erin
